Sentinel Valley Oak
Commonly called the valley oak, the largest of North American oaks, it can grow to 70 feet. It is native to California, growing in the hot central valley, Sierra foothills, and coast ranges of California. Mature specimens may attain an age of up to 600 years. The valley oak's deeply lobed leaves assist in identification. It has thick, ridged bark characteristic of alligator hide. This deciduous oak requires year-round access to groundwater.
